Sins of the Tongue

Much can be said of a person’s character by the way they use their tongue.  I once heard a quote that said,

“Speech is the index of the mind.”

Some quotes from well known figures speak to this:

“The trouble with talking too fast is you may say something you haven’t thought of yet.” – Ann Landers

“By swallowing evil words unsaid, no one has ever harmed his stomach.” – Winston Churchill

“If you think little of a person, you ought to say as little as you think.” – Benjamin Franklin

We could go on and on quoting what men have said about our speech.  So this must be an important topic for us to consider since men have so much to say on the topic… RIGHT?  Well in fact it is Important… but not because men talk about it BUT because the Scriptures teach us about the topic of our speech as Christians.  Some quotes from the Bible are as follows:

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.” – David, Psalm 141:3

But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” – Jesus, Matthew 12:36-37

Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.” – Paul, Colossians 4:6

As we study in this lesson James 3:1-12 tells us that the tongue, while a little member boasts great things, and is impossible to tame.  We need to be diligent to fight against sin and be diligent to control our tongues, because as we will read together our speech can defile us and will defile us if we do not fight against it.  Please join me in learning what God’s word tells us about the Sins of the Tongue.
